Lee sat at her desk, staring absentmindedly at the piles of manila folders, papers, and books sitting on top of it.
Last night played like a reel in her mind over and over again. She wanted to deny what sheâd seen, but sheâd felt the thick gouges on Miloâs kitchen floor from where claws had sunk in for purchase. Sheâd put her arm around Alex, touched her, knew she was a real, whole person. Hell, sheâd even shopped with her.
It hadnât even crossed Leeâs mind to not help her. If the Spice Girls had taught her anything it was that women had to stick together. That, and that feminine sexuality was a force to be reckoned with. Girl Power, baby.
Alex hadnât said much. Lee knew she could be a bit extra sometimes, and on top of everything going on, she didnât push it. She was happy enough giving Alex, what she thought was, some much needed girl time and a break from the drama.
Now, it was three in the afternoon and she felt like she hadnât done a damn thing all day. Giving up on the document in front of her, she sighed and leaned back in her chair.
Looking aimlessly around the room, the red leather spine of La Transformation du Loup Garou sticking out of her purse in the bottom desk drawer caught her eye. Her co-worker Melanie was bustling about the library somewhere, so she had the room to herself. Gently pulling out the book, she sat it on the desk before her.
For a good long while, she did nothing but stare at it, half of the mind that it was suddenly going to attack her if she opened it. But then an idea struck her.
Steeling her nerves, she cracked open the book and turned to the bibliography. She knew it was a long shot, but she wondered if the library had any of the books listed. Ones she mightâve overlooked because her search parameters werenât wide, or narrow, enough to locate them in the stacks.
There was only one book listed: Le journal de Marcelle du Fantastique et Surnaturel. Marcelleâs Diary of the Fantastical and Supernatural. And as luck or fate or the motherfucking cosmos would have it, the library had it somewhere in its depths.
Lee grabbed a pen and started to write down the call number, but was stopped short. She read through the call number several times.
âThatâs not possible,â she said to herself. The Addlestone library used the Library of Congress classification systemâLee knew it wellâand the location for this call number just did not exist. But without any other option, she jot down the number and ventured to find Bâ.
The entirety of the circulating collection was held on the second floor. Lee wound down the stairs next to her office and crossed the floor to the section of the metal moving stacks housing class B: Philosophy. Psychology. Religion.
She ran her finger over the spines between where the general philosophy subclass ended and the logic subclass began. There was one single book with Bâ branded on its spine.
